Family Systemic Constellations is an effective type of therapy developed by Bert Hellinger that examines how the dynamics and relationships within a family system impact the individual members. This approach is based on the ideas that many of our struggles and problems, such as anxiety, depression, relationship issues, and chronic illnesses, can be traced back to unresolved family conflicts or traumatic experiences that have been passed down through generations.
In family constellation therapy, the therapist works with the client to identify and explore patterns of behavior and relationships within their family system. This type of therapy is often conducted through a workshop made up of a group of individuals who are not related. People from the group are chosen by the client to represent aspects of the issue. The client then places the representatives in an arrangement that may seem random at first. However, the positioning allows the representatives to notice feelings that illuminate challenges within the client’s family. They begin to feel and experience the emotions of the person whose role they have taken on. Hellinger said this connectedness is a sense that is taking place in what he called the “Morphogenic Field” or “Knowing Field.”
Present day problems and difficulties are influenced by traumas suffered in previous generations within the family, even if those affected are unaware of the origin of the event(s). We are impacted by the relationship between past and present problems that create what is called systemic entanglements. These entanglements may result from deaths, miscarriages, death during childbirth, suicide, murders, early death of siblings, adoptions, immigration, war, natural disasters, starvation, and abuse. As the healing takes place, unique gifts and strengths are made available to embrace and enhance our lives.
This work has evolved. We are now aware of the impact of our collective trauma. This awareness is vital to the well-being of all persons globally. We know trauma is a shared experience and with each group session where the participants shift toward healing, we shift universally. Dr. Cook invites you to join the circle and experience systemic constellations.
