Yoga therapy is an approach to healing that utilizes the principles and practices of yoga (i.e., simple meditation, breath control and body postures) to promote physical, mental, and emotional well-being. It involves the use of various yoga techniques, such as postures (asanas), breathing exercises (pranayama), meditation, and relaxation, to help individuals manage a wide range of health conditions, including chronic pain, anxiety, depression, and stress. Unlike traditional yoga classes, yoga therapy sessions are tailored to the specific needs and goals of the individual, and may be adapted to accommodate any physical limitations or health concerns. Yoga therapy is often used in conjunction with other forms of therapy or medical treatments, and is often a helpful adjunct to support overall health and wellness.
Dr. Cook is a certified and experienced yoga instructor. Prior to her certification, she was associated with a yoga community in San Diego which gave her foundational knowledge of the benefits of regular stretching and the therapeutic role of yoga in one’s overall well-being. This specialized knowledge and experience informs her chiropractic treatments as well as her yoga sessions to provide a more specific solution to your individual needs. These sessions with Dr. Cook will furnish you with the fundamentals you need to manage your own self-care and prevent the onset of acute pain. Moreover, the yoga exercises can help decrease pain, improve mobility, and substantially reduce or eliminate debilitating pain.
Dr. Cook believes that the connection between muscle and bone needs to be examined properly on a regular basis. Otherwise, it can unnecessarily delay recovery. She believes that one often influences the other and the key is figuring out which one is the main player. In a yoga therapy session, Dr. Cook assesses surrounding bones and muscles to find the possible contributors to your discomfort. Once she understands the mechanics of your pain, she prescribes various stretches and exercises to alleviate the pain and enhance overall well-being.
